15 MUST-HAVES FOR AN ADVENTUROUS SAFARI: TRAVEL LIKE A PRO!

Are you ready for your safari yet? Read this blog and check if you haven’t forgotten anything! You will dive into the wild world and be overwhelmed by rugged nature and wildlife. But before you put on your jungle gear and hang your binoculars around your neck, let’s take a look at the 15 must-have ‘Safari Must-Haves’ you need to pack so you can safari like a pro!

1. A sturdy backpack

First and foremost, invest in a good backpack that can hold all your essentials. Nothing is nicer to have with you than a handy backpack. Now that will be personal for everyone, but what I really like about a backpack: light weight, smooth zippers, sufficient space, storage compartments and waterproof. Which can also be nice; extra loops/hooks where you can hang your cap or something else you want to have quick access to during your safari, if necessary.

2. Binoculars

Safaris are known for spotting animals in their natural environment. Binoculars are indispensable on your game drive – they increase your view and you will find animals that you would otherwise miss. Invest in good binoculars, believe me, it really takes your safari experience to the next level!

3. Camera

Capture every breathtaking moment! A good camera is really needed to capture all those unforgettable images of those beautiful lions, majestic elephants and graceful giraffes. Your safari will offer you endless photo backdrops, trust me! Check out the best tips to take beautiful safari photos here!

4. Hat or cap

Of course it looks very cool and safari’ish. But more importantly: the sun can shine quite hard on safari, and the last thing you want is a head as red as a lobster or sore skin from a sunburn! The sun can shine very brightly in Africa and a hat or cap also helps you to spot wildlife better, without you being blinded by the sunspots staring into the distance while a cheetah walks past you.. A real must-have!

5. Comfortable clothes

Leave your inner fashionista at home and opt for comfort. Thank me later! Safaris are not fashion shows, but adventures to be enjoyed first and foremost. In particular, choose light, breathable clothing that you can easily wear as you make your way through the bush. Although, a leopard or zebra print here and there should be fine, of course, I love it myself! I myself like to shop via https://www.tradeinn.com (outdoor outlet, with good outdoor clothing such as from the brand Craghoppers)

6. Sturdy hiking shoes

You may be covering many miles on your safari, so invest in a pair of sturdy, comfortable walking shoes. Make sure they fit well, are well broken in and are breathable. Not only do good walking shoes provide comfort, they can also provide protection against bites from scorpions or snakes, for example. Not to scare you, because the chances are very slim that this will happen, but better safe than sorry!

7. Sunscreen

Protect yourself against the bright sun by bringing sunscreen with a high SPF and apply it regularly. Do you wear a cap? Then my personal tip: don’t forget to lubricate your ears. I sometimes forget that myself and believe me: OUCH!

8. Insect repellent

You don’t want your safari overshadowed by buzzes and itchy bites. Don’t forget to pack insect repellent to keep those pesky mosquitoes and other critters at bay. In Africa we always use ‘Peaceful sleep’, you can buy this anti-mosquito spray in almost every supermarket, it is very affordable and works very well. Buying an ‘after the bite’ remedy preventively often also pays off.

9. First aid kit

Adventures can be unpredictable, so be sure to bring a first aid kit in case you get a scrape, cut or bug bite. Perhaps a very obvious tip, but an important one as far as I’m concerned!

10. Water bottle

On safari it is important to stay well hydrated, especially in hot and sunny conditions. Bring a sturdy water bottle that you can easily refill, so that you are less likely to become dehydrated or overheated. And you can also toast when you finally find a leopard!

11. Snacks

The adventurous soul needs fuel! Stock up on tasty and nutritious snacks to keep your energy up while on safari. Of course you don’t want to get grumpy (hangry) during your safari, when you should actually be very happy!

12. Notebook and pen

Bring a notebook and pen to record your safari experiences, write down thoughts and write about exciting sightings. If you can’t find the words to describe that special safari moment, just draw a smiley face or a heart – that says it all!

13. Flashlight

Adventure doesn’t stop when the sun goes down, especially in Africa! Lampposts you will not easily encounter. So a flashlight is really a must-have to find your way in the dark and to spot those eyes in the bushes that light up when you spot an animal. Do you want to keep it completely animal-friendly? Then make sure you have a flashlight with red light, animals are much less affected by this than bright white light.

14. Guides and reading materials

Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of the wildlife and ecosystems you will explore. Bring guides and reading material to learn more about the animals and plants you encounter, this really enriches your safari! It is also nice to tick off the animals/birds you have spotted (nice task for the kids). As far as we are concerned, a real must-have!

15. An adventurous spirit

Finally, bring your enthusiasm, curiosity and a spark of adventurous spirit! A safari is an unforgettable experience that will leave you with a deep appreciation for the beauty and diversity of our natural world. Be open to all the beauty around you, put your phone away and turn on all your senses! A new world will open for you, I promise you!

Conclusion

With these 15 essential must-haves, you’ll be ready to take on your safari adventure like a seasoned explorer! From your binoculars to your adventurous spirit, each item will help you get the most out of your safari experience. So grab your backpack, put on your safari hat and prepare to be enchanted by the amazing beauty of Africa’s wildlife.
