Fly into Hosea Kutako International Airport in Windhoek, Namibia, and from there you can take a domestic flight to Walvis Bay Airport or Windhoek Eros Airport, both of which are relatively close to Sossusvlei. From there you will continue with your rental car or a booked tour.
  2. Over Land by 4×4: For those who want to experience the ultimate Namibian road trip – we ABSOLUTELY recommend it – travelling by 4×4 is a great option. Rent a robust off-road vehicle in Windhoek and embark on a beautiful journey through the vast desert landscapes. While it may take a bit longer than flying, the journey itself will be an adventure you’ll never forget.
  3. Organized Tours: If you prefer to leave the logistical aspects of the trip to the professionals, organized tours are also available. Many tour companies offer adventure tours to Sossusvlei, with transportation and activities all arranged for you.

Adventure Accommodations

Desert Campsites: For the adventurous traveler who likes to become one with nature, there are campgrounds such as the Sesriem Campsite and Sossus Oasis Campsite. Here you will find basic facilities such as toilets and showers, but you will sleep under the stars and be lulled by the sounds of the desert. There is also a restaurant at the NWR Sesriem campsite, if you don’t feel like braaiing under the breathtaking starry sky.

Sunrise access to Deadvlei and Dune 45 is only for guests staying at the Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) camp or lodge in Sossusvlei. This offers the opportunity to experience the impressive sunrise in the park and avoid the crowds. This certainly makes for a more exclusive experience! Visitors who spend the night outside the park are not allowed to enter the park until one hour later. It will then be too late to see and photograph the sunrise at Deadvlei or Dune 45. Be sure to book at least 6 months or even longer in advance during high season to be sure of a place via NWR! These places are often fully booked quickly.

Cost and Budget

A) Entrance Fees: To access the spectacular Namib-Naukluft National Park, where Sossusvlei is located, you must pay an entrance fee. Look here for the most current entrance fees! Please note that these rates may vary, so please check current prices before you travel.

B) Accommodation costs: Accommodation costs vary greatly depending on your choice. Campgrounds are generally the most budget-friendly option, while lodges and resorts offer more comfort but also come with a much higher price tag.

Camping in Sossusvlei ranges from basic facilities starting at around $10 to $30 USD per person per night, with some sites offering additional amenities like electricity and barbecue facilities. Luxury lodges nearby offer excellent amenities, such as comfortable rooms, meals, and guided activities, with prices ranging from $200 to $800 USD or more per person per night, depending on the level of luxury.

C) Meals and Activities: Plan your budget for meals, for any guided tours and exciting activities such as hot air ballooning or quad biking. Prices vary, so make sure you have a flexible budget to suit your trip.

What to bring?

A) Daytime Desert Essentials: When exploring the desert during the day, there are some essential items you should bring to stay comfortable and safe:

  1. Daypack: A small, light backpack is useful for carrying your essentials.
  2. Sunscreen: A powerful sunscreen with a high SPF is vital to protect your skin from the intense sun rays.

B) Camping Equipment for a Desert Adventure (if applicable): If you plan to camp in the desert, you need to be well prepared. Provide a sturdy tent that can withstand the elements, a warm sleeping bag to brave the cold nights, cooking equipment and all the essentials you need to be self-sufficient in the desert. Please note: wild camping is not allowed, so book at one of the designated camping pitches!

What can you do in Sossusvlei?

Climbing Sand Dunes: One of the most exciting adventures in Sossusvlei is climbing the giant sand dunes. It takes quite a bit of effort. Try to climb the dunes as early as possible, when it is still a bit cooler and the sand a bit more compact! Some physical condition/fitness will come in handy.

Dune 45 is by far the most famous dune in Sossusvlei and is known for its impressive height and iconic shape. It is a favorite choice for visitors because of the breathtaking view from the top, especially at sunrise.

Big Daddy is one of the tallest sand dunes in the world and offers a challenging climb. The view from the top is incredible and includes a panoramic view of the surrounding dunes and Deadvlei.

Big Mama is a neighboring dune to Big Daddy and offers a similarly challenging climb and beautiful views.

Elim Dune may not be as high as some of the other dunes, but it offers stunning views of nearby Sesriem Canyon and the surrounding landscape. It’s ideal to climb this dune during sunset, because it is relatively close to the gate. This way you can leave the park in time before closing time!

The Mystical Deadvlei: Located in Sossusvlei, Deadvlei is by far one of the most spectacular places we’ve ever been! Here are ancient dead camel thorn trees on a clay pan surrounded by the gigantic red sand dunes. This unique place, where time seems to stand still, really gives you the feeling that you are on another planet. It is a beautiful place to photograph. It is not without reason photographers from all over the world come to this special place!

Explore the Depths of Sesriem Canyon: Descend into the depths of Sesriem Canyon, a natural canyon carved by the force of the Tsauchab River. This cool oasis in the desert is a chance to explore the geological history of the region. You can walk around here yourself, or you can do this with a guide who can tell you all about this special place. Entrance is free.

Adventurous Desert Safari: Besides climbing the sand dunes and enjoying enchanting landscapes, you can also experience an exciting desert safari in Sossusvlei and the Namib Desert! As you drive and walk around, you may encounter wildlife that has adapted to this challenging environment, such as oryx, springbok, jackal and ostrich. With a bit of luck you can also spot hyenas and even the brown hyena. If you are the ultimate lucky person, you may even spot a cape fox, aardvark, striped polecat, bat-eared fox, porcupine or an aardwolf (among others)! Everything lives in the sand: spiders, scorpions, lizards, snakes and geckos. So much diversity of animals in the desert, isn’t it special?!

Float above the Desert in a Hot Air Balloon: For an unparalleled view of the vast Namib Desert, take a hot air balloon ride. Soar above the dunes as the sun rises and experience the magical landscape from above.
